Robber takes advantage of disabled veteran's generosity; Spends Thanksgiving in the Lee County Jail
Lee County Sheriff’s Office detectives have arrested a man who robbed a wheelchair-bound veteran on Thanksgiving morning.
On Thursday, November 22, 2018, Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a robbery of a person at Discount Liquor located at 1800 North Tamiami Trail, North Fort Myers.
The victim completed his own purchase when a male customer approached him asking if he would pay for the stranger’s beer and cigarettes. The victim obliged the stranger and paid for the items. The wheelchair bound victim exited the store with his leather bag draped around his neck. Inside the bag was cash and a veteran’s affairs identification card. The stranger then yanked the bag from the victim’s neck and fled the parking lot on foot.
Several patrol deputies, K9 Unit, and Aviation swarmed the area. Due to the relentless efforts of our K9 Unit, the suspect was located, hiding behind a dumpster. The property was also recovered and returned back to the victim.
