On June 19, 2018, Michael Whatley (a convicted felon) entered a local gun shop attempting to purchase a firearm.  Whatley made concerning comments about possessing explosives, several firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

An alert gun shop staff made immediate contact with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The LCSO Intelligence Unit assumed the investigation and ultimately located Whatley at his residence in Lehigh Acres.

Probable cause was developed by Intelligence Unit Detectives to author a search warrant for Whatley’s residence. During the execution of the search warrant, Detectives located the following:

Two 9mm pistols.
Two, high powered assault rifles .556 caliber along with high powered        scopes.
A Glock conversion kit to transition a pistol to a rifle.
Approximately 1500 rounds of ammunition.
Nine high capacity (30 rounds) 9mm magazines.
Several 30 round, high capacity assault rifle magazines.
100  feet of waterproof cannon fuse.
One half-pound of Tannerite exploding powder.

“This is a great example of teamwork between our citizens and the hardworking members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office who work around the clock to aggressively pursue criminal complaints,” stated Undersheriff Carmine Marceno.
