Burglary Suspect Captured
After several burglaries were committed in the Lehigh Acres area, that included a church and funeral home, detectives have arrested the suspected culprit.
On June 28, at approximately 12:18 a.m., East District deputies responded to the Subway, located at 2802 Lee Boulevard, Lehigh Acres reference an alarm. When deputies arrived they observed a shattered front door. The business was cleared for any suspects and deputies reported on the damage.
While conducting an area check in the vicinity, an East District Sergeant observed a reckless driver. A traffic stop was conducted and Bernie Shane (DOB 11/20/76) was arrested on an unrelated traffic offense. An inventory tow sheet was completed and photos were taken of the vehicle and the contents inside the vehicle.
Shortly after, East District deputies responded to St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Lehigh Acres reference a burglary. The front double doors had been damaged, as they were forced open, and two “poor” boxes were forced open with all the money taken from inside. The suspect also damaged other property inside and destroyed the sound system. Around that same time, two other businesses had been found to have been burglarized, along with two vehicles in the same vicinity.
Through the investigation, it was learned that multiple items stolen from the businesses and vehicles were found inside Shane’s vehicle. After viewing the surveillance video at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Hodges Funeral Home, Subway and CVS, along with finding multiple tools used to commit burglaries and finding evidence in the suspects’ home after conducting a search warrant, Bernie Shane (DOB 11/20/76) of 1013 DeSoto Avenue, Lehigh Acres was arrested.
Shane was charged with four counts of Burglary, four counts of Larceny, two counts of Damage of Property/Criminal Mischief and one count of Possession of Burglary Tools with Intent to Use.
