A St. James City man is in custody after holding another man at gunpoint this morning. Deputies were dispatched, at 1:16 a.m., to the suspect's Pine Island home at 2291 York Road where they met with a 50 year old male victim of an aggravated assault and false imprisonment. An attempt was made to have the accused, 51 year old Duane Matthew Wyatt (d-o-b 3/11/63), step outside to discuss the matter, but he refused, closed and locked his door.
A detective interviewed the victim who described the events of the night. He met with Wyatt at Froggie's Bar in St. James City and had a few drinks. Wyatt invited the man back to his residence to smoke marijuana. The subject drove Wyatt to his home on York Road. As time passed, Wyatt made an unwanted advance on the victim who attempted to leave right away, however, Wyatt had taken his keys and refused to give them back. Wyatt then pointed a handgun in the face of the victim and insisted he stay and "party". Eventually, Wyatt placed the gun on a counter and the man was able to grab it and flee the home as Wyatt threatened to kill him.
An incident command was established along York Road and members of the Sheriff's Office Special Operations Unit and Hostage Negotiation Team responded in efforts to bring a safe resolution to the circumstances. Wyatt was known to have other weapons inside his home. He walked out of his residence and surrendered to deputies at 9:19 a.m., without further incident.
Wyatt is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and battery. He has been transported to the Lee County Jail. His inmate photo and additional information is available on the Sheriff's Office website at www.sheriffleefl.org under the Arrest Search tab.
