Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit are investigating a hit and run that left two people with serious life-threatening injuries.
On Saturday, August 24 at approximately 8:27 p.m., deputies responded to a call regarding a traffic crash that occurred at the intersection of Lee Boulevard and Sunshine Boulevard in Lehigh Acres. Two vehicles being driven northbound on Sunshine Boulevard were struck by a vehicle travelling southbound that jumped the center median and crossed over into the northbound lane. The first vehicle was side swiped and the second vehicle was hit head-on.
The vehicle side-swiped was a 1998 blue Toyota 4-dour Sedan and was being driven by Janice Slater (DOB 01/06/40). The vehicle hit head-on was a 1993 white Mercury Villager van being driven by Nilda Elena Nadal Santiago (DOB 12/07/41). Santiago and her passenger, Angel Luis Santiago DOB 04/26/46) were transported to the hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.
The driver at fault fled from the scene on foot after crashing the vehicle into a tree. He was driving a 2000 white Ford F-150 truck. The driver subsequently left his passenger and the owner of the vehicle, Heriberto Garcia-Irene (DOB 07/27/67), in the front passenger seat. The name of the driver is unknown at this time.
