Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers receives more than 400 tips a month on felony incidents from an area that serves Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee counties. In 2011, the program received more than 4,997 calls leading to 778 arrests. There were 1,795 cases closed and stolen property and narcotics recovered totaled $329,986 dollars. Meanwhile, eligible rewards topped $182,000 dollars for the year.
Southwest Florida businessmen and women who, like you, want to take an active part in stopping the increase of crime in their community. Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, Inc. is a non-profit organization with oversight by a Board of Directors comprised of local, private citizens. The program is administered through a coordinator and assistant employed by the Lee County Sheriff's Office and assigned full-time to Crime Stoppers.
While Crime Stoppers has some grant funding, administered through the Florida Attorney General's Office, it is most importantly supported through your donations of money, goods or services. Everyday, facts about an unsolved felony crime are broadcast on radio and television, printed in various newspapers and circulated to numerous law enforcement agencies throughout Southwest Florida. Citizens are asked to call Crime Stoppers if they have any information related to these crimes, locations of wanted persons or information about crime in their neighborhood. All calls are kept in complete confidence. Individuals supplying information leading to an arrest are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
Since 1994, Student Crime Stoppers has been promoted in Lee County schools. Happily, now all five counties of Southwest Florida have welcomed the youth outreach. It's purpose: to aid law enforcement in reducing the crime rate in schools, on school grounds, and in the community. Students using the hotline also remain anonymous and are eligible for rewards up to $1,000 dollars. In addition to receiving calls on criminal activity, the hotline also assists students with crisis referral.
